Protest rvaca u Teheranu
« on: February 22, 2013, 01:19:54 PM »
The Senior World Cup in Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling is the first major FILA competition after the London Olympic Games and most recent announcement of the IOC Executive Board’s recommendation to remove wrestling from among the core sports for the 2020 Olympic Games. The competition is hosted by the Iranian Wrestling Federation in Tehran on 19-22 February 2013 and it brings together the 10 strongest teams of the world in both wrestling styles, that is Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, Korea, Russia, and Turkey in Greco-Roman and Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, and United States of America in Freestyle.

This prestigious event offered the wrestling community the opportunity to address the IOC Executive Board’s decision by both reminding the central place of wrestling in the Iranian culture (wrestling is the country’s No. 1 sport with millions of registered athletes) and the key-values which embody wrestling. In addition to being one of the toughest and most complete combat sports on earth, wrestling contributes to building the human character by teaching respect for the opponent, humbleness in victory and sportsmanship in defeat; all core principles of the Olympic Movement.

In an attempt to show disapproval of the IOC Executive Board’s recommendation, all athletes of the 14 participating nations united on the mats and held each other’s hands in a sign of solidarity and brotherhood. Conflicting countries such as Iran and USA joined this symbolic action to show that the love for wrestling transcends all political tensions and cultural barriers. To support the action, the organizing Federation had prepared banners in both English and Farsi with the slogan “Olympics Without Wrestling? Never, never...”
